Hurricane Relief
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may provide immigration relief to individuals affected by hurricanes. This can include extensions of status, waivers of fees, and other forms of assistance.
North Carolina Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that provides low-income individuals and families with access to affordable healthcare. While North Carolina Medicaid generally requires U.S. citizenship or legal residency, there are limited circumstances under which undocumented immigrants may qualify for emergency Medicaid benefits.
A new law in North Carolina, HB-10, mandates increased cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. The law requires sheriffs to verify the immigration status of individuals arrested for certain felonies and misdemeanors. If an ICE detainer is issued, these individuals may be held for up to 48 hours.
While some law enforcement agencies believe the law won't significantly impact their current practices, others are working to implement the new procedures. Concerns have been raised by immigrant communities that the law could lead to increased profiling and fear among undocumented individuals. However, law enforcement officials maintain that the law is intended to target individuals with serious criminal charges and will not be used for broader immigration enforcement.
